Kent C. New, MD, PhD, FAANS(L)

Kent C. New, MD, PhD, FAANS(L) was born December 6, 1966 in Newport News, VA. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1989. From 1990-1998, he attended Georgetown University where he received his MD and PhD, Microbiology & Immunology. From 1993-1994, he was a Teaching Assistant at the Microbiology Laboratory, Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

He began his surgery internship at Duke University Medical Center in 1998, which was followed by his Residency in Neurosurgery completed in 2005.

Throughout his career, Dr. New has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including: Westinghouse Science Talent Search Winner (1985); Scholar - Virginia Concrete Foundation (1985-1989); Summer Student Fellowship - National Institutes of Health (1985-1987); Dean's List - University of Virginia (1986-1988); Pre-Medical Honor Society (1986-1989); Secretary - Phi Delta Theta Fraternity (1988-1989); Fellowship - Medical Scientist Training Program (1990-1998); Scholarship - ARCS Foundation (1992-1994); Junior Investigator Travel Award - American Epilepsy Society (1992-1995); 1st Place Predoctoral Division - Georgetown University Student Research Days (1993); Graduate Student Travel Award - 19th International Herpesvirus Workshop (1994); MCGSO Travel Award - 25th Annual Society for Neuroscience Meeting (1995); Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society - Georgetown Medical School (1997-1998); Medical Student Award in Pharmacology - Georgetown Medical School (1999-2000); and Fellowship - Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation (2001-2003)

Dr. New’s professional memberships and services have included: House Staff Representative at Duke University Medical Center (1999-2000); MD/PhD Student Council Representative (1992-1993), MD/PhD Advisory Committee (1992-1995) and Neuroscience Program Committee on Students (1993-1994) at Georgetown University; and Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Committee on Graduate Education in the Basic Sciences (1995). Additionally, Dr. New served on the Loki Science Magazine Editorial Board from 1987-1989.

His research interests include: Dendritic cell based immunologic therapies of malignant glioma, viral vectors for gene therapy in the central nervous system, oncolytic viruses for treatment of malignant gliomas and clinical studies in surgical treatment of spine disorders.

Dr. New has presented at the Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci Annual Conference, the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr. New served as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Jacksonville, Florida. Currently, he is on staff at St. Vincent’s Brain and Spine Institute in Jacksonville. Dr. New is also the Founding Partner of Nuance Health, LLC.

Dr. New is married to Jennifer Sawyer New. They have three children.
