David L. Kelly Jr. Fund

Fund Purpose: To support Resident Education and Research within department of neurosurgery at Wake Forest University.

David L. Kelly, Jr., MD, FAANS(L), was born in 1935, in Elkin, N.C. He received his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and his MD from the University of North Carolina in 1959. His neurosurgery residency training was completed in 1965, having been trained at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine/North Carolina Baptist Hospital; the Peter Bent Brigham and Children’s Hospital in Boston; and he also had a year of fellowship in neurophysiology in 1963-64 at Washington University in St. Louis. He joined the faculty at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1978. Dr. Kelly stepped down as chairman of the department of neurosurgery at Wake Forest Medical Center and acting head of the division of surgical sciences in 2000. Under his leadership, there were three endowed chairs established in neurosurgery.

Dr. Kelly has received membership in Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina, the Distinguished Practitioner Award from the Southern Neurosurgery Society and the Distinguished Faculty Award from Wake Forest Medical School.

Dr. Kelly has been elected president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the American Academy of Neurological Surgery (AAcNS), the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society and the Surgical Society of Winston-Salem. He has served on the ABNS and on the Residency Review Committee for Neurosurgery.

In addition, he has served on the Advisory Council for Neurosurgery to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and has held offices with the Neurosurgical Society of America (NSA) and the Southern Neurosurgical organization. He has participated extensively in the activities of the Spine Task Force for Neurosurgery and the AANS and CNS.

Dr. Kelly was the recipient of the Harvey Cushing Medal from the AANS in 1999.

He has served the Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS) as a member of the Council, on the Nominating Committee and the Membership Committee. He was chairman of the Resident Selection and Evaluation Committee and was instrumental in obtaining funding for the BOSK project.

His major interests are in neurosurgical resident education and training, neurosurgical treatment of spinal disorders and pituitary surgery. He has published over 150 articles as well as a number of book chapters and served on numerous editorial boards.

Dr. Kelly is married to Sally, who has been of constant and invaluable support to him in his profession. They have four children: Kathy, David, Mary Brooks and Julia Ann, and seven grandchildren.
