An award from the NREF can have an extraordinary impact on a medical career. The recognition that comes from an NREF award can serve as a springboard for future opportunities, and affecting the overall trajectory of a neurosurgical career.
Anthony Piscopo, University of Iowa, was a 2021 recipient of the NREF Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship.
The project he completed for the fellowship was accepted as a top-ranked abstract for an oral presentation at the 2022 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting.
Mr. Piscopo presented his work in Philadelphia at the Young Neurosurgeons Research Forum and won the Donald O. Quest Award for Best Medical Student Clinical Science Presentation of the year!
In addition, an article Mr. Piscopo wrote and completed for his NREF Medical Student Fellowship - "Intraarterial encephalography from an acutely implanted aneurysm embolization device in awake humans" - was released and published in the JNS.
He shared the news with NREF to express his gratitude for the fantastic opportunity and to show donors the fruit of the work that they supported.
We congratulate Mr. Piscopo and all NREF award recipients making a difference in the field of neurosurgery.
