Chair’s Message – The Enthusiasm to Do Great Things

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Dr. Harvey Cushing (1869-1939) once said, “Nothing great or new can be done without enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the fly-wheel which carries your saw through the knots in the log.”

As the Chair of the NREF, it is humbling and gratifying to witness the enthusiasm of the neurosurgical community in support of the Foundation’s mission. The generosity of our donors, industry partners and affiliated organizations make it possible for the NREF to provide education to neurosurgeons at all stages of their careers, as well as funding research into new and existing neurosurgical treatments and to identify links between best practices and improved outcomes in patient care.

  • INDIVIDUAL DONORS: The Cushing Circle of Giving recognizes elite members who’ve demonstrated a profound commitment to the future of neurosurgery through their charitable donations. In the past five years, the Cushing Circle has grown from no organizational and only 35 individual members to 147 individual and 39 organizational members today.

  • INDUSTRY PARTNERS: Partnerships with industry are critical to the advancement of technology, research and education in neurosurgery. The NREF recognizes the corporate supporters who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the neurosciences as the foundation’s Pinnacle Partners in Neurosurgery: Brainlab, DePuy Synthes, Globus Medical, Medtronic, Varian Medical Systems and ZEISS.
  • AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS: Collaboration with groups within organized neurosurgery, such as the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the Neurosurgical Society of America and the Society of Neurological Surgeons, as well as private foundations like B*CURED and the Chuck Noll Foundation, is critical to the discovery of tomorrow’s neurosurgical breakthroughs.

Support from the greater neurosurgical community translated to an NREF investment of $1,677,805 in research and educational programs in Fiscal Year 2018.

Your passion, your commitment, your enthusiasm is contributing to the advancement of our profession.

Let us continue to do great things together. Next month, we recognize Dr. Harvey Cushing’s 150th birthday. Honor the legacy of the father of modern neurosurgery with a contribution to NREF. Donate $1,500 and receive a commemorative, limited-edition Harvey Cushing 150th Birthday LEGO® figure (while supplies last). To make your gift, visit our secure online Donate page or stop by Booth #828 at the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego, April 14-16.

Thank you for including the NREF in your philanthropy; I look forward to seeing you in San Diego!

Warmest regards,

Regis W. Haid Jr., MD, FAANS
