Newsworthy Notes from NREF

  • On April 8, we remember Dr. Harvey Cushing on his 150th birthday. Honor the legacy of the father of modern neurosurgery with a contribution to the NREF. Donate $1,500 and receive a commemorative, limited-edition Harvey Cushing 150th Birthday LEGO® minifigure [AIK1] (while supplies last). To make your gift, visit our secure online Donate page or stop by Booth 828 at the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego, April 14-16.

  • Partnerships with industry are critical to the advancement of technology, research and education in neurosurgery. The NREF recognizes corporate supporters who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the neurosciences as NREF’s Pinnacle Partners in Neurosurgery: Brainlab, DePuy Synthes, Globus Medical, Medtronic, Varian Medical Systems and ZEISS. For information on the Pinnacle Partners program and related benefits, contact NREF at info@nref.org or call 847.378.0500.

  • The NREF offers free Resident Education Courses to provide advanced training in topic areas not always covered within neurosurgical residency. Since its inception, the NREF has funded 79 courses attended by more than 2,000 residents and fellows, with thousands more viewing presentations online. As space is limited at these courses, several of the courses are available online, free of charge, to neurosurgical residents around the world. Each program consists of several hours of didactic lectures based on the course topic.

  • The John C. Oakley Honor Your Mentor Fund, sponsored by the AANS/CNS Section on Pain, will be awarding $25,000 in 2019. This traveling fellowship allows a resident, fellow or faculty member to experience clinical rotations with pain neurosurgeons in the United States. For more information or to apply for this award, visit the Pain Section website.

  • Save the Date for these upcoming Charity Events:
    • The 16th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament, hosted by Columbia University, is planned for Saturday, June 8, 2019, in New York City's Central Park. Proceeds benefit the Andrew T. Parsa Honor Your Mentor Fund for brain tumor research through the NREF.
    • The 2nd Annual Neurosurgery Charity Volleyball Tournament, hosted by UCLA, will take place Saturday, August 24, 2019, in Santa Monica, Calif. The day includes tournaments with different teams from the west coast. Proceeds from the games will support research funding through the NREF.
  • Support NREF while you shop! Register with iGive.com or AmazonSmile and designate the NREF as your charity. The NREF will receive a donation whenever you shop via these websites at no additional cost to you. Your generosity makes a difference in patients’ lives.
