NREF Honors Inspirational Mentors and Leaders

Neurosurgeons are truly fortunate. Neurosurgery is a specialty that allows the pursuit of technical excellence, academic rigor and patient service. But, neurosurgeons do not reach goals without some help. Training with outstanding mentors is a key to success, but neurosurgeons also benefit from the wisdom, inspiration and encouragement of friends, loved ones and colleagues.

Honor Your Mentor (HYM) Funds recognize the incredible men and women who have advanced neurosurgery. The HYM program started in 2014 with six funds and total pledges of $177,195 from 37 donors. Today, there are 57 HYM funds with pledges totaling over $6 million from over 1,800 donors.

NREF Honor Funds recognize individuals and organizations that have made a profound impact on our lives. The NREF salutes the following distinguished honorees with newly established funds:

Veena D. Mummaneni Fund

Fund Purpose: To fund an award for an outstanding woman resident or fellow to present a top rated abstract at the AANS Annual Scientific Meeting.

The fund was established by Praveen V. Mummaneni, MD, FAANS, in memory of his mother, a practicing OB/GYN in California for over 30 years. Throughout her career, Dr. Mummaneni was a strong proponent of women physicians. The NREF Veena Mummaneni-WINS Residents and Fellows Award will celebrate an outstanding young neurosurgeon with an award presented at the AANS Annual Scientific Meeting.

Young Neurosurgeons - Chris A. Philips Honor Fund

Fund Purpose: To advance medical student mentorship, research, education and participation in organized neurosurgery, particularly students who would otherwise lack access.

For three decades, Chris was committed to the AANS, providing exemplary service to its members as part of the professional staff. During her years of service, she served as a guide and mentor to many neurosurgeons, particularly in her work with the Young Neurosurgeons Committee, where she helped many ascending AANS leaders navigate the nuances of the organization early in their careers.

Show your gratitude to a mentor instrumental in your career development with a donation to an HYM Fund through the NREF. Click here to view the complete list of HYM Fund honorees or to make a donation. A gift to the NREF opens doors for the next generation of neurosurgeons.
