Fund Purpose: To support research in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery.
Roy A. E. Bakay, MD, FAANS, was born in Chicago in 1949. He graduated from Beloit College in 1971 and was valedictorian for the Bachelor of Science degree awardees. Dr. Bakay attended Northwestern University Medical School, where he won the Merriam Research Award. After completing medical school in 1975, he was a surgical intern at the University of Michigan from 1975 to 1976. His neurosurgical residency was completed at the University of Washington from 1976 to 1981 under Arthur A. Ward, Jr., MD.
After completing a National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellowship, he joined the faculty at Emory University as assistant professor in 1982 and became full professor in 1993. While on the Emory Faculty (from 1982 to 2000), he was section chief of neurological surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, director of neurological surgery resident research as well as affiliate scientist in neurobiology at Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center. He has received grants from private organizations, the Veterans Administration, NIH and Emory University for research that has investigated the development of epileptic foci in primates and CNS transplantation techniques using the MPTP model in primates.
In 2000, he joined the faculty at Rush University Medical Center and the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch as professor and vice chairman of the department of neurological surgery as well as director of the Movement Disorder Functional Neurosurgery Program.
Dr. Bakay joined the executive board of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in 1987, serving as vice president from 1989-1991, and then as president from 1991 to 1993. He served as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) representative to UNOS, the AANS/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Washington Committee Key Person Program and member of the advisory panel to the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress.
He was a founding member of the American Society for Neural Transplantation and Repair. He was also an ad hoc reviewer for a number of journals, including the Journal of Neurosurgery, New England Journal of Medicine, Experimental Neurology and Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. He was also on the editorial board of Neurosurgery, Cell Transplantation and was on the advisory board for the Journal of Neural Transmission. Dr. Bakay was a member of multiple national and international scientific and neurosurgical societies. In 1994 he was elected to the Society of Neurological Surgeons.
