Fund Purpose: To support clinical and basic science research and training in cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
Warren R. Selman, MD, FAANS, was born in 1952 in Toledo, Ohio. He attended the University of Toledo where he graduated in 1973 summa cum laude with a BS degree. He then attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and received his MD degree in 1977. He carried out his Neurosurgical Training at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland.
In 1984, Dr. Selman was appointed to the staff of University Hospitals of Cleveland as assistant professor of neurological surgery. In 1990, he was promoted to associate professor. He was named director of the Cerebrovascular Center at University Hospitals in 1992 and was promoted to professor and vice-chairman of the department of neurological surgery in 1994. Dr. Selman is also on staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cleveland.
He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee and secretary of the Publications Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS); a member of the Publications Committee of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS); chairman of the Joint Committee for Medical Education Subcommittee on Continuing Medical Education for Non-neurosurgeons and chairman of the Bylaws Committee for the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section; a member of the Neurosurgical Society of America; and a member of the International Society of Pituitary Surgeons. Memberships to local societies include the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland, the Ohio State Medical Association and the Northeast Ohio Neurosurgical Society.
Journal editorial board responsibilities include Neurosurgery and American Family Physician. Since 1992, Dr. Selman has been an active member of the Neurobiology Merit Review for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C.
His bibliography includes 86 journal and book publications and 36 published abstracts. His clinical specialties include the surgical management of cerebrovascular and neuroendocrine disorders. His experimental research interest focuses on the metabolic alterations that underlie acute cerebral ischemia.
